NASA’s Science Mission Directorate may be cut, The Washington Post reports. In particular, the budget for Earth exploration may be cut from $2.4 billion to $1 billion, astrophysics from $1.6 billion to $0.5 billion, and heliophysics from $0.8 billion to $0.5 billion.
Representatives of the presidential administration emphasize that key programs aimed at returning humans to the Moon will remain a priority.
However, the scientific community is concerned: the American Astronomical Society called the proposed measures “catastrophic” for US leadership in space.
A partisan group of congressmen, including representatives from Maryland, announced their intention to resist the cuts, citing a threat to US competitiveness in the space industry.
The final decision on the budget will be made after negotiations with Congress, which will begin in the coming months. NASA is refraining from commenting for now, waiting for a detailed proposal.
